IF YOU WEAR HIGH HEELS,
HOPE MAY NOT BE LOST???
High heels given the boot by new study

TORONTO - A new study says millions of women are putting their health at risk by what they choose
to wear on their feet: high heels.
"Prolonged wear for years can cause swelling tissue, recurring pain and difficulty walking."
It's been well-known that high heels cause foot problems and extra stress on the knees, but a
study says women are twice as likely as men to have knee osteoarthritis a painful joint disease.
The study puts the blame firmly on womens' love of the heel. Even more surprising, the current
trend towards wider heels actually makes matters worse.
Orthopedic surgeon Nizar Mohamed says thick heels are worse because they are more comfortable and
women are more apt to wear them longer.
"Prolonged wear for years can cause swelling tissue, recurring pain and difficulty walking,"
Mohammed said.
High heels have been a fashion staple for women for hundreds of years. Changing attitudes will be
hard going.
On the street, many women say they can't part with their elevated footwear.
"They make you feel sexy and fun," said one young woman.
"I've been doing it for 20 years, old habits are hard to change," said another.
According to doctors, by the time women feel any pain in their knees, it's too late the damage is
irreversible.
They say no heel is a good heel. If you have to wear them, put on wider heels but wear them
periodocially
and for shorter periods.
